Description:

If your cable lineup includes IFC (Independent Film Channel), then you might be familiar with the TV show Portlandia, which is executive produced by Saturday Night Live’s Lorne Michaels and was co-created by SNL alums Jonathan Krisel and Fred Armisen.  The series pokes fun at Portland, Oregon’s extreme liberal mindset, which led to the creation of unique characters that include a Reggae bass playing Mayor (Kyle MacLachlan); Peter and Nance, an excessively eco-conscious couple wrapped up in the local organic food movement; Toni and Candice, former activists who run the book shop “Women and Women First”; and Marcus and Madeline Harris, nicknamed the “Sanitation Twins” due to their obsession with separating trash.  This Portlandia TV show t-shirt displays various elements from the IFC series, including Fred Armisen’s quote describing Portland as being “where young people go to retire.” The quote was inspired by the city’s high number of underemployed young adults.

This isn’t to say that the Portlandia TV series is conservative.  The writers are merely capitalizing on the somewhat overly liberal aspects of Portland.  The characters never quite cross the line from being humorously unique to utterly ridiculous, which seems to be why Portland residents have for the most part welcomed the show.  If you like the quirky aspects of Portlandia, this tee is the perfect way to show that you’re a fan.
